3-day tour in Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary

Tour description in short

Location of Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary on the map of Thailand

Our 3-day tour in Huai Kha Khaeng is all about wildlife watching. We will spend quite a lot of time in a wildlife observation tower. But other activities on our trip include game drives and also some hiking.

We stay in a basic resort outside the reserve, and might do some night driving to spot nocturnal wildlife in the forested areas outside the park boundaries.

Why our 3-day tour?

If waiting several hours in a wildlife observation tower is not your thing, this might not be the best tour destination for you. But if you are into that, our 3-day wildlife tour in Huai Kha Khaeng will be a great experience.

Even if sightings are almost unheard of, just being in the habitat of the Indochinese Tiger, is extremely thrilling. Often, we encounter pugmarks, scratches, and scrapes; that alone is worth the trip.

This tour is especially interesting for wildlife enthusiasts who have already been on our wildlife trips in the other parks. There are various species here, that are not easily seen elsewhere. You will love it!

Location of Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary on the map of Thailand

Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary makes for a great addition to the other parks we offer. Especially, for those who wish to see more of Thailand's wildlife. On the tours in Huai Kha Khaeng we spend a lot of time in wildlife observation towers, but we will also search for wildlife by car and a bit on foot.

The park is famous for protecting the largest wild tiger population in Thailand, though sightings of the big cats are next to impossible.

However, there are some amazing other creatures like e.g., the endangered Banteng, and the stunning Green Peafowl that are fairly commonly seen here and make it worth to visit this wildlife sanctuary.

The forest in the accessible part of the park is very different from the other parks. More open and dry deciduous forest. Probably not the image people have about the Thai jungles.

But that's exactly why this place is perfect to be combined with the other parks for a longer wildlife holiday. That way you will see more of the diversity of both wildlife and landscapes of Thailand.

Why Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary as a tour destination?

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary is the main core of the Western Forest Complex - Thailand's largest remaining wilderness. A third, or maybe even half of the remaining wild Tiger population of the country inhabits this nature reserve.

On our wildlife tours, we'll search for tracks of the big cats, the chance of a sighting is even in this sanctuary very slim. However, the fact tigers survive here means prey species' numbers are high; Huai Kha Khaeng is home to lots of interesting wildlife including Banteng, Green Peafowl, Golden Jackals, Asian Elephant, and lots more. Reason enough to visit!

What are the available tour activities in Huai Kha Khaeng?

We spend hours waiting patiently at wildlife watching hides, go hiking on foot in tiger habitat, and do game drives in search for the elusive wildlife.

These tours in Huai Kha Khaeng are maybe not suitable for the average visitor. Not everyone enjoys waiting for hours in a watch tower. Unless you are after a couple specific species like for example, Banteng, Green Peafowl, Eld's and Hog Deer, and so on, the majority of people are likely better off visiting parks like Khao Yai, or Kaeng Krachan. However, if you're a wildlife enthusiast hoping to see a few species that are not easily seen elsewhere, this is a great place to spend your time searching for animals.

Where is the wildlife sanctuary located?

The area where we operate our wildlife tours in Huai Kha Khaeng lies 320km from Bangkok, near Uthai Thani in the West of Thailand.

It can be tricky to reach this region by public transport, as it is not touristy at all. You're best off travelling with a private taxi service (we can arrange transfers from e.g., Bangkok).

The road into the sanctuary is a dusty gravel road. But usually in reasonable condition.

When is the best time for tours in Huai Kha Khaeng?

The wildlife sanctuary is open year round. The end of the cool and dry winter months is most likely the best time of year to visit. Temperatures start to rise and water levels are low, forcing wildlife to visit the remaining water supplies.

In the hot summer months (March - May) the burning of agricultural land and forest fires can fill the air with smog. Which can be unpleasant.

In the wet season, the park is more lush. Even though that might make wildlife watching a little bit more complicated, still most trips we largely get to see the same species as any other trip.
