Go on safari, sleep, and hike in elephant habitat!
Elephant encounter on foot in Kui Buri national park
Encountering the most dangerous animal of the jungles of Thailand, the Asian Elephant, on foot, is something you won't easily forget.
In search for tracks
While trekking through prime elephant habitat, we check for recent tracks, and pause every now and then to listen carefully. Elephants walk more quietly than most humans.
Why Kui Buri?
If your wish is to see Asian Elephants in the wild in Thailand, look no further! Kui Buri national park is by far the best spot to see wild elephants. This park might not offer the biodiversity and beautiful evergreen jungles like in e.g. Kaeng Krachan or Khao Yai, but the presence of the biggest of all mammals makes it a great wildlife tour destination. Besides elephants the park is home to large herds of Gaur and even some Banteng.
And what if we tell you that your visit contributes to the protection of this park and these animals? How?
Read the complete story why your visit helps on our Kui Buri national park tours page
Kui Buri makes a great addition to one of our tour packages in Kaeng Krachan national park where seeing wild elephants is uncommon, but instead a greater variety of other animals and birds can be seen, as well as the true jungles with impressive trees and lush vegetation.
What we do on our Overnight tours?
Our Overnight Tours in Kui Buri offer a unique way to see and experience the wild. Besides a game drive, and even a hike, those who can let go of the Western standards of comfort, might even experience the nocturnal 'songs' of elephants and Gaur. Some nights it sounds like you are part of the movie "Jurassic Park"!
This tour is not for the faint-hearted. The heat can be exhausting when in the open-air safari truck or when hiking in the open savannahs. And hiking in the territory of the most dangerous mammals of Thailand, the elephant and the Gaur can be thrilling to say the least. Due to the danger we have decided to only offer this for a maximum group size of 6 people, with minimum age of 15 years old.
Hiking in Kui Buri national park
Hiking in Kui Buri national park is not for faint-hearted. First of all you will be in the territory of the most dangerous mammals of Thailand; second the open savannah offer very little shade so the sun can be burning and exhausting. But it's an exciting experience, especially when luck is on your side to meet the giant of the jungle while trekking.
Kui Buri Overnight Elephant Tour | ITINERARY
Here follows the itinerary.
Day 1 (14:30PM to ±18:00PM)
Today we start with a safari drive with primary focus on finding elephants. During this drive we make stops at some look-outs where we try to spot the big herbivores that inhabit this place. Deeper into the reserve we check the main Gaur viewing area, hoping the world's largest wild cattle will make a show. This will make up the first day's itinerary. Depending on your choice, you'll be brought to the ranger station where we stay overnight with the sounds of nature, or you'll be returned to the hotel outside the park. At your accommodation, dinner will be provided by our guide.
There are no activities planned in the dark, because wandering around in darkness in this park is too dangerous with the numbers of elephants and Gaur that occur.
Day 2 (06:00AM to ±11:00AM)
The second day we leave the safety of the car and explore the park on foot. We will have to be very cautious and watch for any fresh tracks of the big herbivores to avoid to run into them at too close range. This is the most exciting part of this overnight tour. The drives are generally more successful, but nothing beats the thrilling experience of meeting an elephant or gaur on foot.
When on foot it allows us to get a closer look at the smaller inhabitants as well. Birdlife, reptiles etc might be encountered.
This hike takes place in open savannah with scattered pockets of open forest. If the sun is shining it can be tough, so bring sufficient protection. We provide drinking water. After finishing the hike we will finish the trip with a bit of a safari drive out of the park.
